CELINE DE WAAL MALEFIJT

TRANSIT MANTRA

People moving by, rhythmically, by the hours.
A wave of morning density, culminating into slow afternoon passing by.
Never leaving the movement behind.
Even if all cyclists are gone the movement still awaits in their absence.

The pedestrian area of the Fellenoord is a typical transition structure, connecting various neighboring areas.
It is used frequently by most of Eindhoven’s inhabitants and by day visitors, parking their car in Woensel to walk towards the city centre.
Although we use this district so often, its fait is to be left forgotten.

It is an area in which people are constantly focused on their destination, quickly scanning the surroundings to move as effective as possible.
Time seems to be in acceleration while space is experienced very superficial.

I propose to develop this area into a place to Remember.

A place that tickles the imagination, a place where new memories come to existence and where movement and stagnation both aesthetically influence the surroundings, interacting with each other.

The transit experience should be part of the personality of this modern city.

It is a city in movement, never finished and always searching for identity.
This distinctive character is exactly what can be experienced in micro perspective at the Fellenoord, an area where movement is the best describing word.
However this area is in need for an identity in order to contribute to the overall city experience.

“Beside the many destinations, the city is especially a place where you are in transition.“
- ‘In transit’ NAi Rotterdam

Transition in urban space has a natural foundation in how we understand and relate to the environment.
My concept shows the beauty of the district, inseparable from the characteristic flow of people.
By increasing the experience of the characteristic movement ‘Transit Mantra’ will change the perception of being in transition into a tangible interaction with this space in between.
