Although the hype around 'green' resources and environmental friendly products is going on for several years, the number of real product innovations in this field that are available on the market is still too small. Energy efficiency should be key in all of our lives, to ensure our level of prosperity, and not just available for people who can afford it.

The SolarCooker is a sun heated oven that can have a huge impact on Eindhoven, as well as the rest of the world.

High-tech developments, as well as simple technologies can make big differences in our energy consumption. New fancy technologies are often seen as innovative, but we believe that true innovation lies in the perfect combination of technology, context and the user.

Our SolarCooker is based on ‘ancient’ heating principles and physics and is engineered with a special focus on usability, efficiency and costs. Our innovation lies in the fine balance and optimization of physics, manufacturing techniques and usability. Just by putting the SolarCooker in the sunlight it will reach the desired temperature (100+ ˚C). This technique requires no external fuel, so no open fire, and the relatively low temperature prevents the food from burning at any time.

Currently, related products cannot be manufactured on a large scale, are too expensive, too big and too clumsy for regular consumers. The SolarCooker costs less than 30 Euro, its efficiency is validated by the TU/e and weights less than 4 kilos.

As stated, we don’t believe that our product only has value to the city of Eindhoven. Preferably, we would see every household using a SolarCooker. With over 300.000 households in the region of Eindhoven, it will have a big impact on the energy consumption and will reduce the use of gas and electricity. In 3rd world countries however, this product can save lives of people who cannot afford clean drinking water or fuel to cook their food.

This competition is a good exposure for our project and will hopefully open doors towards actually manufacture and market the SolarCooker. We are already working together with the foundation SolarMates in realizing this process for 3rd world countries, but finding the funding and right people is hard.
